Why is Diabetic Foot Care Important?

Foot care is important for everybody, but it’s especially crucial for people who have diabetes. Increases in the body’s sugar levels, if left unchecked, can potentially cause nerve damage in the feet. This creates a condition called peripheral neuropathy. If combined with poor circulation, peripheral neuropathy can make it very difficult for the body to perform its natural healing process. That can lead to a higher chance of infection and limb-threatening conditions. Routine podiatry appointments and quick treatments for diabetic ulcers will help preserve the health of your feet.

Diabetic Ulcers

An ulcer is an open sore that doesn’t heal correctly. Due to peripheral neuropathy, some people with diabetes can develop ulcers on their feet and toes. Ulcers often start from minor injuries, such as cutting the bottom of your foot to stubbing your toe, causing it to bleed.

Sometimes, ulcers may not present themselves right away. You should always look for sores or lesions on your feet every day, as well as review your feet for signs of swelling, redness, pain, discharge, or another unusual symptom.

The podiatry team at Ambulatory Foot Care Center specializes in treating diabetic ulcers — give us a call as soon as you notice an ulcer forming. We’ll heal the ulcer right away and prevent the damage from spreading.

Tips for Healthy Feet

If you have diabetes, these steps will help you maintain healthy feet throughout your life:

Check Your Feet

Every day, take time to check your feet for cuts, scrapes, or other lesions. You’ll also want to look for issues like swelling, redness, or any unusual change in your feet.

Wash Your Feet

Ideally, you should wash your feet thoroughly every day. Afterwards, dry your feet completely and apply lotion to the tops and bottoms of your feet (avoid in between the toes, as this is a vulnerable area that could lead to infection).

Always Wear Shoes/Socks

Make sure that your shoes fit you well and won’t cause blisters. You shouldn’t go barefoot, as this increases the chance of a minor foot injury that could turn serious.

Keep Blood Flowing

Walking is a great way to keep your feet active and to keep blood flowing. During times of leisure, try to keep your feet elevated rather than on the ground.

Have Regular Checkups with Your Doctor

To ensure that your feet are still healthy and in great shape, schedule an appointment with Dr. Vasiliadis at Ambulatory Foot Care Center. If anything is out of the ordinary, we can take a closer look and develop a plan of action right away.
